A single Bengal in a busy, people-filled house can be fine. A single Bengal in a quiet house that sits empty all day often is not. That is the real question — not whether two is always better.

Why people ask this

Bengals want company. They play hard, they get bored, and they notice when the house goes quiet. A second kitten from the same litter gives them a teammate for the hours you are at work. The curtains usually last longer.

One kitten can still work if you already have a confident dog or an adult cat that likes youngsters, and you are home enough to play. Two is not a rule. It is a fit.

Two boys, two girls, or one of each

A lot of breeders, including well-known programs, used to say: two boys or a boy and a girl, skip two girls. That came from what they saw in their own homes, not from a study.

A University of Georgia study on neutered indoor pairs found no real difference. Male-male, female-female, and mixed pairs were about as friendly — and about as cranky — as each other.

What mattered more was how long they had lived together and how many good spots they each had. Extra beds, extra high perches, extra litter boxes. Cats fight less when they do not have to share one favorite window.

When one is enough

• You work from home or someone is around most of the day.
• You already have a dog or cat that wants a playmate.
• You can do two real play sessions a day, not one tired wand wave at 9 p.m.
• You have a plan for supervised outdoor time — catio, cat-proofed yard, or leash in a safe park — so the one cat is not stuck staring at a closed door.

When two is the kinder choice

• The house is empty for long stretches.
• This is your first cat and you are not sure you can be the only entertainment.
• You want the kittens to wear each other out instead of inventing jobs on the counters.

Two from the same litter is easier than adding a second cat a year later. Littermates already have a language. An adult Bengal plus a new kitten can work. It takes slower introductions and more space.

What two actually costs you

A second kitten is not only a second price. It is a second set of vet visits, more food, and another tall perch so they are not stacked on the same shelf fighting over it. If that second line item is what makes the whole plan tight, get one and do it well.
